Radiation Safety

Radiation Safety is used to track the Licenses, Permits, Purchases, and Inventories within an organization of Radioactive Materials.

Accessing Radiation Safety

From the Salute Portal landing page, select Radiation Safety from the Programs modules

Rad Licenses

Licenses provide institutional record keeping for licenses issued by regulatory authorities for purchasing, storing, and using radioactive materials.

To access Rad Licenses:

Select Licenses from the Radiation Safety landing page

Managing a Rad License:

From the Rad Licenses landing page, you will be able to:

  1. Select an individual item to see detailed information

  2. Filter the list by selecting a column header (can do multiple filters) to see a select list of items

  3. Create a new Rad License

Radiation Safety 3 

When an item is selected, you will be able to see specific information related to that Rad License

  1. License ID (Salute generated)

  2. License Number (Issued by agency)

  3. Description (e.g., Human use)

  4. Institution (if specific to a group within the organization)

  5. Address

  6. Issue/Expiry dates

  7. Active/Inactive checkbox (not the checkbox and Issue/Expiry dates are NOT linked)
  8. Attachments: Can upload the detailed permit

  9. Links: Can link to a URL or webpage

In addition to the overview information, there are two tables at the bottom that allow users to manage the License Items and Rad Permits

  1. License Items

    1. Add the specific isotope information associated with a license, including Maximum Activity and Maximum Quantity (if applicable). Note, Maximum Quantity is not a required field, but the unit when indicating quantity will need to be required for calculations done in the inventory section of the Rad Safety module.

Rad Permits

Rad Permits are internally issued "Permits" given to a group, department, or laboratory within an organization for use of radioactive materials.

To Access Rad Permits:

  1. A Rad Permit can be accessed directly from the main Rad Safety menu page or from a Rad License page.
  2. From the Rad Permits Landing page or from the list of Rad Permits on the Rad License page, you can click into an existing record or add a new Rad Permit from the top right corner.

Note: A Rad Permit can only fall within the scope of a single License. If a permitted group uses radioactive materials across multiple Institutional Licenses, they will need to be permitted separately. Within a Rad Permit, EHS can define the permitted license items from the overall institutional license and their limits for that permitted group. 

Managing a Rad Permit:

The Rad Permit form has 5 sections:

  1. Overview - The general Permit detail including: 
    1. Rad Permit ID (Salute issued)
    2. Rad Permit Name (Client issued)
    3. Rad Permit Holder (point of contact for the Permit)
    4. Rad License (Options will be those available in the Rad License list)
    5. Date Created (Automated field)

  2. Rad License Items - The permit-by-permit License Items can be defined here along with their maximum allowable activities and quantities. Note, only the license items available in the selected Rad License will be available to choose from here. Screenshot 2023-07-11 at 3.41.20 PM
  3. Rad Users - The Users and their types can be defined within the Permit.
    1. Types include: 
      1. Permit Holder - Point of contact for the Permit.
      2. Authorized User - Nuclear medicine physicians and other clinical staff.
      3. Approved User - Non-clinical groups who are permitted to use/work near radioactive material.

  4. Rad Inventory Items - Used to track where radioactive materials within the present Rad Permit are stored and what their activity levels are.

  5. Rad Mat Purchases - Used to track purchases of radioactive materials within the limits of their permitted activity levels and quantities.

Rad Inventories

To access Rad Inventories: 

  1. A Rad Inventory items can be accessed directly from the main Rad Safety menu page or from a Rad Permit Page.
  2. From the Rad Inventories Landing page or from within a Rad Permit on the Rad License page, you can click into an existing record or add a new Rad Permit from the top right corner.

Managing a Rad Inventory: 

A Rad Inventory has two sections:

  1. Overview - Includes basic information about the Inventory.
  2. Rad Inventory Items - Details what Items are currently within this inventory. 

Adding Rad Inventory Items:

Rad Inventory Items can be added from 3 places:

  1. From directly within the Permit by selecting +Add Rad Inventory Item.

 Rad Material Purchase

To access Rad Material Purchase: 

  1. A Rad Material Purchase can be accessed directly from the main Rad Safety menu page or from a Rad Permit Page.
  2. From the Rad Material Purchase Landing page or from within a Rad Permit on the Rad License page, you can click into an existing record or add a new Rad Permit from the top right corner. 

Managing a Rad Material Purchase

A Rad Material Purchase has 3 sections: 

  1. Overview - Gathers Permit, Rad User, and basic Purchase information. The Rad User list will only include the Users within the scope of the Permit selected.
  2. Product Information - The User can specify what they are purchasing and in what quantity. The Rad License Items will only include the Items within the scope of the Permit selected. 
  3. Receipt of Goods - The User can add in date of receipt and status information. 

Adding a Rad Material Purchase

A new Rad Material Purchase can be added from two places:

  1. From directly within a Rad Permit by selecting +Add Rad Material Purchase.
  2. From the Rad Material Purchase Landing Page.
